Interview of Mr Diamantis N. Pateras & John G. Pateras
To Stefanos Papandreou & Theano Kalapotharakou, Co-publishers ELNAVI
Founded in 2015 by visionary and powerful shipowner Nikolas D. Pateras, Contships Management Inc. quickly established itself as a major force of Greek shipping, acquiring 65 container vessels and trading exclusively in the 900-2,000 TEU feeder segment. The company is now navigating a decisive strategic shift led by the next generation of leadership. This transition was marked in early 2025 when Contships became the first private Greek shipping company to enter the Nordic Bond market, raising $100 million sustainability-linked bond and recently executing a $75 million Tap Issue.
We spoke with Deputy CFO Diamantis N. Pateras and Chief Technical Officer John G. Pateras about this financial innovation and the three pillars driving the company’s future: aggressive fleet renewal, sustainability-linked operations, and maximizing fleet reliability and utilization through long-term partnerships.

Diamantis N. Pateras, son of Nikolas D. Pateras the Chairman and CEO of Contships, has been with the company for three years. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from City University of London and a Master’s degree in Shipping, Trade & Finance from Cass Business School, London.
John G. Pateras, son of George D. Pateras, Deputy Chairman of Contships and former President of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, has six years of experience at Contships. He holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). They both believe in perfect co-operation, traditional values and deep innovations.
